Standing Strong: Overcoming Ergonomic Challenges in Endoscopy Nursing
Poster Abstract

Endoscopy nurses face continuous ergonomic challenges that stem from the physical demands of endoscopic procedures. These include prolonged standing in fixed positions, working with monitors placed at suboptimal heights, repetitive hand and wrist movements during scope handling assistance, frequent bending or twisting of the spine, and the need to lift, push, or reposition equipment. Over time, these stressors contribute to neck, shoulder, and lower back pain, joint stiffness, reduced dexterity, fatigue, and an increased risk of long-term musculoskeletal disorders. Such strain not only affects individual well-being but may also influence procedural flow, team coordination, and overall patient safety

Drawing on observations and experience in our endoscopy unit, nursing staff identified key ergonomic risk factors and implemented targeted strategies to reduce daily physical load. Adjustments included optimizing workspace layout, individualizing monitor height and distance, using adjustable stools for prolonged procedures, integrating brief stretching routines between cases, and ensuring rotation of roles to avoid repetitive strain. Staff also engaged in ongoing peer education to reinforce awareness of proper body mechanics and early recognition of overuse symptoms.

These collective efforts have led to noticeable improvements, including reduced discomfort, better concentration, increased energy levels, and higher job satisfaction. Importantly, procedural efficiency and patient safety have improved through smoother workflow and enhanced staff resilience.

This work underscores the essential role of endoscopy nurses in recognizing and proactively managing ergonomic risks. It highlights that even low-cost, practical interventions can meaningfully enhance the quality of practice, protect musculoskeletal health, and strengthen patient safety. The strategies implemented in our unit may serve as a practical model for other endoscopy departments seeking to elevate professional performance and create safer, more sustainable working conditions.
