Green endoscopy: a new paradigm
Poster Abstract

Introduction: Green endoscopy refers to efforts and measures aimed at making endoscopic procedures more environmentally sustainable. ESGE-ESGENA recommends that endoscopy units assess, disclose, and audit their environmental impact. International Societies have developed practical measures including waste reduction, implementation of recycling programs, and reuse of equipment whenever possible. The goal is to create a more sustainable endoscopy unit by reducing waste and costs.

Methods: We conducted a descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional study and subsequently implemented a continuous improvement project in the digestive endoscopy unit to address this issue. In phase 1, we weighed the waste produced in the unit during 10 random shifts in January and February 2025. In phase 2, the multidisciplinary team received training on waste management, segregation, and recycling. In phase 3, waste was weighed again after the implementation of the new measures.

Results: In phase 1, 125 endoscopic procedures (EGD and colonoscopy) were performed in 74 patients. Group I/II waste totaled approximately 31 kg, Group III waste amounted to 104.8 kg, and Group IV waste reached 10 L. In phase 3, we observed a significant reduction in waste production and, consequently, in costs.

: Green endoscopy has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by promoting sustainability and minimizing environmental impact. The key to the future lies in adopting innovative practices, fostering education, and encouraging collaboration among healthcare professionals, patients, and the community. Engaging unit managers and educating healthcare professionals are essential to promote ecological practices and reduce costs.Reflecting to evolve: reflection is a commitment to continuous improvement.
